Progressive influencer Deja Foxx suffered a major defeat in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District, losing by more than 40 points to Adelita Grijalva. Grijalva, a Pima County Supervisor and daughter of the late Rep. Raúl Grijalva, secured 62% of the vote, while Foxx, a 25-year-old digital personality with nearly 400,000 TikTok followers, received just 21%. Despite high-profile endorsements from David Hogg and the PAC “Leaders We Deserve,” Foxx could not overcome Grijalva’s local support and established political network.
Foxx emphasized her personal story, including growing up in Section 8 housing and early activism, but it wasn’t enough to sway voters. Grijalva’s campaign benefited from backing by prominent figures, including Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Arizona Sens. Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego.
Even though both candidates supported similar progressive policies such as Medicare for All, environmental justice, and tribal sovereignty, voters favored the familiar name with decades of community roots. In her victory speech, Grijalva credited her father’s legacy and thanked the voters who helped continue it. Meanwhile, in New York, progressive momentum continues with Zohran Mamdani’s recent victory in the Democratic mayoral primary, shaking up the political landscape.
Mamdani’s win has sparked discussions among the Democratic Socialists of America about potential primary challenges against several congressional Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. These developments highlight the ongoing tension between progressive newcomers and established figures within the Democratic Party, showing that local support, name recognition, and political networks remain crucial in elections, even as social media and activism play an increasingly prominent role.
