When the actress and former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star arrived at the 2026 MTV VMAs, she looked almost unrecognizable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her usual dark hair was gone, replaced by a short, spiky platinum-blonde style, while her white gown featured a sculpted bodice, a dramatic draped skirt and deliberately provocative details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was the kind of red-carpet look that was bound to get people talking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And it did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some viewers praised Lisa Rinna for going all-in on the bold fashion statement, while others were far less impressed. But there was actually a very specific reason behind the dramatic transformation \u2014 and it had nothing to do with simply wanting to shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rinna arrived at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 27 for the VMAs, where Madonna was set to open the show with her first VMA performance in more than two decades<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And Rinna had clearly decided to embrace the occasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Accoding to InStyle, she wore a custom white Seks gown with a corseted bodice and sculptural breastplate featuring faux nipples, along with a flowing, draped skirt and a high slit. Her platinum-blonde, spiky hairstyle added another unmistakable Madonna-inspired element to the look<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rinna later explained exactly what she was going for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m here for one reason and one reason only: Madonna. I love to create, I love to do this fashion thing. And this is what came out of Madonna VMAs Sunday. Here we are,\u201d she told People.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The transformation was a clear nod to Madonna\u2019s iconic image, particularly the provocative fashion and blonde looks associated with the pop star\u2019s earlier career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But once Rinna stepped onto the red carpet, the conversation quickly became about much more than the inspiration behind the outfit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then the internet had its say
The photos didn\u2019t take long to spread online, and reactions were all over the place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some people were completely on board with Rinna\u2019s dramatic appearance. One X user summed up their reaction simply<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But not everyone was laughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One critic admitted that Rinna appeared to be in incredible shape while making it clear they disliked almost everything else about the outfit<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over on X, one commenter wasn\u2019t impressed, writing, \u201cHer dress is not classy; it\u2019s inappropriate.\u201d Another called the look \u201cvery disrespectful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Others took issue specifically with the construction of the gown. Comments on Instagram questioned the fabric and the way the bodice looked in photographs, with one person writing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another asked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, Rinna has never exactly been known for blending into the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Whether people loved or hated the look, there was little doubt that Rinna had committed completely to the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The platinum hair, sculpted white gown and exaggerated details created a dramatically different image from the one longtime fans are used to seeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And that willingness to experiment fits with the way Rinna has talked about getting older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She recently celebrated her 63rd birthday and has repeatedly pushed back against the idea that women should become less daring as they age<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to InStyle, Rinna reflected on reaching her 60s and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNumber one, you got there. You\u2019ve survived long enough in life\u2026and you\u2019re like, Oh, I did it. I made it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And it just feels like you can almost do anything at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rinna has also criticized the cultural expectations surrounding women and aging, arguing that women in their 60s and 70s can still be \u201cviable and still sexual and still beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her VMAs appearance certainly seemed to put that attitude into practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For Rinna, however, the night wasn\u2019t really about creating controversy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was about celebrating someone she clearly admires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
